Chess Pieces:moves and capture
King | Queen | Rook | Bishop | Knight | Pawn

PAWN

The least mobile piece of all, the Pawn may only move one square at a time vertically, and towards the enemy (forward).  However, it may advance two squares on the first move.

The Pawn has an unusual property in that once it reaches the other end of the board, it may become a Queen, Rook, Bishop, or Knight, though not a King.  This is known as a "promotion," and takes place regardless of how many pieces are on the board.  Thus, it is possible to have more than one Queen, or two Rooks, Bishops, or Knights on the board.  In the majority of cases, a Queen will be chosen.

Unlike all the other pieces, the Pawn captures in a manner different from its movement.  It moves vertically forward, but takes the square DIAGONALLY forward.

MOVE

Direction and number of steps the Pawn may move.

CAPTURE

The Pawn to the left may move here to capture the Knight, but may not capture the Black's Pawn in front of it.
